ATEX-certified industrial 128-channel ultrasonic acoustic imaging camera for localisation of partial discharge and gas, pressure, and vacuum leaks in Zone 2 hazardous areas.

DESCRIPTION:

The MPAC128-ATEX Acoustic Imager from Megger Group Limited is a 128-channel airborne ultrasonic imaging system designed for predictive maintenance in hazardous environments. Certified to ATEX II 3 G Ex ic IIC T5 Gc, the unit is approved for operation in Zone 2 gas atmospheres while maintaining full acoustic imaging performance.

At the core of the system is a 128-element digital MEMS microphone array operating across an effective ultrasonic detection bandwidth of approximately 2 kHz to 48 kHz. This range enables reliable detection of airborne ultrasound generated by corona, surface tracking, arcing, and early insulation breakdown, as well as turbulent flow signatures associated with compressed air and gas leaks. Real-time beamforming algorithms process acoustic phase differences to determine source location and intensity, with results overlaid onto an integrated 8 MP optical image displayed on a 7-inch (1024 × 600 px) capacitive touchscreen.

The MPAC128-ATEX supports inspection distances from 0.3 m up to approximately 120 m, allowing safe stand-off assessment of energised medium- and high-voltage assets. Adjustable frequency filtering and dynamic range control improve discrimination in acoustically noisy industrial environments. For partial discharge investigations, integrated PRPD functionality assists in defect classification and pattern analysis, supporting more accurate root-cause diagnostics.

For industrial leak detection, the system is capable of identifying sub-millilitre per second leak rates under typical operating pressures (for example, detection of approximately 0.37 ml/s at 1 m and 7 bar under reference conditions). Leak quantification tools allow operators to visualise severity and prioritise remediation based on energy loss impact.

The instrument is engineered for field deployment with an IP54-rated enclosure, operational temperature range of approximately 20 °C to +50 °C, and relative humidity tolerance up to 95% non-condensing. Internal storage (approximately 8 GB) supports image (.jpg), video (.mp4), and audio (.wav) capture, with expandable memory capability and USB data export for integration into asset management systems. A rechargeable 7.2 V Li-ion battery (approx. 6600 mAh) provides typical runtime of around 4 hours, supporting extended inspection routines.

By combining ATEX compliance with high-resolution acoustic imaging, the MPAC128-ATEX enables utilities, petrochemical operators, and industrial facilities to implement structured condition-based maintenance programmes within classified hazardous areas, improving reliability while maintaining regulatory compliance.
