Dual-channel 50 ohm / 75 ohm time domain reflectometer for fault location in power, telecom and coaxial cable systems up to 20 km.

DESCRIPTION:

The TDR2050 from Megger Group Limited is a high-resolution, dual-channel time domain reflectometer engineered for precise fault location and cable analysis across power, telecommunications, and RF distribution networks.

The instrument provides selectable 50 ohm and 75 ohm output impedance, allowing direct testing of power cables, control wiring, twisted pair, and coaxial systems without external matching accessories. With a maximum range capability of up to 20 km (65,600 ft) depending on cable type and velocity factor, the TDR2050 supports both short-run diagnostics and long-distance infrastructure assessment.

A fast pulse rise time of approximately 2 ns enables high-resolution fault identification, supporting detection of high-impedance joints, open circuits, short circuits, water ingress, crushed sections, and impedance mismatches. Adjustable pulse widths from 2 ns to 10 µs allow optimisation between near-end resolution and long-range energy penetration.

The unit features dual-channel operation, enabling simultaneous comparison of paired conductors or side-by-side cable analysis. A 5.7-inch high-resolution colour display (typically 800 × 480 resolution) presents clear waveform traces with zoom and cursor functionality for accurate distance-to-fault calculation. Distance accuracy is typically within ±1% of range, subject to correct velocity factor settings.

The TDR2050 supports selectable velocity factor adjustment (0.1 to 0.99) for accurate calibration to specific cable types. Internal trace storage and USB connectivity allow waveform capture, transfer, and documentation for reporting and asset management integration.

Designed for field deployment, the instrument incorporates a rugged enclosure with rechargeable battery operation suitable for extended testing sessions. Applications include:

  • LV and MV power cable fault location

  • Telecom copper pair diagnostics

  • Coaxial feeder and RF cable verification

  • Cable length measurement and integrity assessment

  • Preventative maintenance and post-installation commissioning

By combining fast rise-time pulse generation, dual impedance flexibility, and extended range capability, the TDR2050 provides utilities, contractors, and network operators with a versatile diagnostic platform for rapid and repeatable cable fault analysis.
