Handheld time domain reflectometer with up to 5km range, ultrafast pulse and simple autoset up for locating faults and impedance discontinuities on metallic cable pairs.

DESCRIPTION:

The Megger TDR1000/3 Handheld Time Domain Reflectometer from Megger Group Limited is a compact, robust singlechannel TDR designed for rapid fault location and integrity assessment on metallic cable pairs in communications, control and lowvoltage network applications. With a minimum resolution of 0.1 m and a maximum range up to approximately 5 km (dependent on selected velocity factor and cable type), the instrument enables precise distancetofault determination across a wide range of deployments.

Configurable output impedance options (25, 50, 75 and 100 ohm) and an adjustable velocity factor range of 0.20–0.99allow accurate calibration to suit diverse cable media without external matching accessories. Builtin automatic setup simplifies field operation by optimising pulse width, gain and range, while an ultrafast pulse (typically 2 ns rise time)enhances nearend fault discrimination for opens, shorts and impedance mismatches.

The instrument incorporates a backlit monochrome graphic LCD (256 × 128 pixels) with adjustable contrast for clear trace interpretation in variable lighting, and a Trace Hold feature supporting comparative analysis of sequential measurements. Housed in an IP54rated enclosure, the TDR1000/3 is engineered for everyday field use; supplied test leads include a 2 m set with 4 mm shrouded connectors to miniature crocodile clips.

Power is provided by five AA (LR6) cells offering extended runtime suitable for extended site work, and distance readouts can be displayed in metres or feet. The TDR’s compact form factor (approximately 230 × 115 × 48 mm) and lightweight construction (about 0.6 kg) support handheld operation across maintenance, installation and commissioning tasks.

Typical applications include:

  • Cable length measurement and continuity verification

  • Open circuit, short circuit and impedance change localisation

  • Telecom and data pair fault diagnostics

  • Control and instrumentation cable health assessment
